At Attitude Clothing, we are passionate about goth and alternative lifestyles and all the subcultures that have evolved from them. Today, we are exploring nu-goth, a contemporary subculture that has grown and changed since the early noughties. We explore the origins of nu-goth, how to embrace the subculture and how to get the look!

What is nu-goth?
A modern gothic subculture, nu-goth has steadily gained momentum since the late noughties, capturing the attention of fashion-forward goths everywhere. Nu-goth is a contemporary take on the traditional gothic aesthetic, focusing on modern fashion and music. The looks have developed, beginning as a blend of popular hipster, 90s grunge, and trad-goth, developing into its aesthetic, notable for its mix of traditional aesthetics and contemporary street fashion.
Nu-goth origins
The first emergence of nu-goth can be traced back to the late 1970s, though it gained most traction in the late noughties. Young, nascent goths wanted to craft an everyday style that didn’t require such huge effort as some traditional Victorian-goth styles. The result was a more casual, cool vibe reminiscent of The Craft while retaining classically goth features that give it a distinctly modern look.
Nu-goth vs trad-goth
The clue to the difference between these two subcultures is in the name. Trad goths tend to be staunchly devoted to the music scene that gothic culture was built upon, whereas nu-goths are more lenient with their musical preferences and focus more on the fashion element.
This has led to some disparity between these particular subcultures. Trad goths see nu-goths as posers appropriating their culture, while nu-goths find trad-goths to be gatekeepers and snobby.
In truth, this imagined conflict is pretty minor, and most trad-goths are unphased by nu-goths and are just pleased to see the goth movement evolving and expanding. Needless to say, we’re all friends here!
How to be nu-goth
Fashion: The nu-goth fashion is contemporary and cool. It blends classic goth motifs with modern trends. Plenty of black, religious and occult symbols paired with big platform shoes, statement round sunglasses and perhaps a pair of customised tights.
DIY and customisation are important parts of all gothic culture. Alternative clothing and accessories have not always been easy to find, so goths have learned to patch, paint, slash, shred and stitch their garments to suit their aesthetic. Handmade accessories are commonplace in nu-goth looks, whether repurposing chains into necklaces or safety pins into earrings.
Another element of nu-goth fashion is its inclusivity. Gothic fashion has always been largely androgynous and gender diverse. Stemming from punk origins that have always rejected societal standards and stereotypes, it feels only natural that gender conformity would follow as something to be challenged. Even alternative icon Kurt Cobain wore dresses. Nu-goth, and every gothic subculture for that matter, is about expressing yourself without the confines of gender.
Music: Despite nu-goths being chastised for their lack of emphasis on music in their subculture, they tend to have a diverse taste that spans multiple decades. From classic goth favourites like The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds to more witch house artists like Grimes, Crystal Castles, Switchblade Symphony and Salem.
Interests: Common interests among the nu-goth community include psychology, music, fashion, religion and the occult. Nu-goths tend to be deeply philosophical, and while not all are particularly religious, they are fascinated by religious beliefs and symbolism.
